2nd best final round helps Red Devils to 4th place finish in SLIAC

CARLYLE, Ill. — The Eureka golf team carded the second lowest score in the final round of the to move past two teams into fourth place at the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship.  The Red Devils' final round team score of 327 was two strokes better than the 329 posted by league champion Webster University and nine shots better than the 336 carded by second place Maryville University.

 

Matt Morse (Magnolia, Ill./Fieldcrest) led the charge for EC with a third round 77, which ranked as the third best final round out of the 30 golfers in the event.  Morse went from 22nd to a tie for 12th on the overall leaderboard, missing a top ten finish by a single shot with a 54-hole total of 249 (86-86-77).

 

Brady Wildenradt (Delavan, Ill./HS) also saved his best for last by firing a closing round 81 for the ninth best score on the day.  He gained four spots on the final day to finish in 18th at 253 (85-87-81).  Dan Cameron (Byron, Ill./HS) moved up one spot to finish in 15th after a final round 84 for a total of 251 (81-86-84).

 

Eureka's T.J. Schopp (LeRoy, Ill./HS) finished in 19th at 254 (88-81-85), while Kyle Todd (Oakford, Ill./PORTA) was 28th with a 272 (89-84-99).

 

Webster denied Maryville back-to-back conference titles by recovering from a six stroke deficit entering the final round to win by one.  Webster's winning total of 965 was followed by Maryville (966), Blackburn (973), Eureka (1004), Westminster (1011) and Fontbonne (1016).  The Red Devils trailed Fontbonne by two and Westminster by three heading into the final 18.

 

This was the final golf tournament for EC this season.  Head Coach Nick Birkey will announce his team awards at the E-Tribe Individual Sports Spring Banquet on Tuesday, April 29 at 6:30 pm in the Terrill Rooms of the Cerf Center.
