Hot shooting Blue Jays fly over EC 76-67

Eureka College's hopes of salvaging a split on the weekend were deflated due to deadly shooting by a homestanding Westminster College squad. The Blue Jays (8-3, 4-1 SLIAC) connected on 8-of-12 attempts from long range and 15-of-16 tries from the charity stripe after halftime to send the Red Devils (7-5, 4-2 SLIAC) to their second consecutive conference defeat.

The Red Devils held Westminster to 29 percent (9-31) from the field in the opening stanza, while posting a 46 percent (10-22) success rate themselves. Eureka secured eight more rebounds than Westminster in the first half as well, but also committed six more turnovers and the score was tied at 27 at intermission.

Eureka took the early lead in the second half only to allow one to slip away for the second straight day. Robert Davis scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half to lead the Westminster comeback. Both squads ended an identical 22-for-53 (41.5 percent) from the floor in the game. Westminster had the edge in three-point shooting 48 percent (13-27) to 32 percent (8-25).

A.J. Richard (Gibson City, Ill./GCMS) was the high point scorer for Eureka with 18. Matt McComb (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley) and Brady Wildenradt (Delavan, Ill../HS) were also in double figures with 15 and 12 respectively. Chris Tarpley (Pekin, Ill./HS) accounted for Eureka's 39-26 advantaged on rebounding with 13 boards off the bench.

The Red Devils will open a pivotal two-game homestand Tuesday, January 16 at 6:00 pm against MacMurray College. The Bonati Fitness Center Appreciation Rally will follow the game at approximately 7:30 pm. MacMurray and Eureka are currently tied for third place in the league standings.
