Long range bombers lead EC to key SLIAC win
EUREKA — Eureka College used a dominant first half and timely three-point shooting for a key 67-60 conference win over Greenville College Wednesday night. The Red Devils' 46 percent (10-22) attack from behind the three-point arc marked their best of the season, and included a 5-for-9 effort in the second half.
Eureka (4-11, 4-4 SLIAC) jumped all over Greenville (6-8, 3-4 SLIAC) early. Led by eight points by senior Matt McComb (Fairview, Ill./Spoon river Valley), EC sprinted out to a 15-3 lead just over five minutes after the tip. It would get even worse before it got better for the visiting Panthers as three-pointers by Michael Zasada (McHenry, Ill./HS) and James Kowalski (El Paso, Ill./El Paso-Gridley) fell in during a 12-3 Eureka spurt that pushed the lead up to 27-10.
The Red Devils would eventually go up by 18 before Greenville scored the final five tallies of the half to set the halftime score at 33-20.
Both teams shot 50 percent in the second half, though with nine turnovers, EC nearly let the Panthers back into the game.
Brady Wildenradt (Delavan, Ill./HS) saved all 12 of his points for the second stanza. He drained three treys in the first five minutes of the half to help EC stay ahead by double figures. Greenville later mustered a 15-4 push that got the Panthers within five, but Mark Darnall (Lake Mills, Wis./HS) put in the next five points to cushion the Eureka advantage to 59-49 with 6:24 remaining.
The Panthers would get as close as four points with two minutes to play, and even had a look at a three-pointer to cut into the deficit some more, but the attempt was way off and EC made enough free throws down the stretch to keep Greenville at bay.
McComb and Darnall shared game-high honors with 16 points each. McComb dished out six assists as well. The two veteran guards combined for five steals. Zasada was the leading rebounder on the night with eight. He also chipped 11 points, five blocks and three steals. Wildenradt added five assists and six boards. Eureka shot 50 percent (24-for-48) overall from the field, but just 47 percent (9-for-19) at the line.
Greenville was led by Ben Cochran's 11 points, five assists and four steals. The Panthers shot 42 percent (22-52), making just 8 out of 14 foul shots. They connected on 6-of-11 three-point attempts in the second half.
The Red Devils next play at Principia College Saturday, January 26 at 1:00 pm. Eureka topped Principia 67-58 earlier this season. ###
