Eureka's 4-game SLIAC winning streak snapped by Griffins
ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Michael Zasada (McHenry) scored 20 of his career-high 24 points for the Red Devils after halftime, but Eureka College could not spring the upset on Fontbonne University Saturday afternoon, falling in St. Louis by the count of 81-70. The sophomore forward made eight out of nine field goal tries in the second half, including 4-of-5 from long range after sitting for 10 minutes in the opening frame due to foul trouble.
The game had a much different feel than the first go-round in which Fontbonne (16-4, 10-2 SLIAC) raced out to a 19-3 advantage and never looked back en route to an 81-63 victory. This time, the Griffins largest first half cushion was nine points at 26-17, but that was answered by seven straight Eureka (7-13, 7-5 SLIAC) points to cut the margin to two.
The Red Devils later launched a 9-1 rally to take a brief 33-32. Matt McComb (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley) capped the comeback with two free throws and one of his several driving lay ups. The Griffins countered with eight straight tallies to be answered only by a Chris Beecher (Dixon, Ill./HS) dunk for EC in the final moments before halftime.
Fontbonne went into intermission ahead 40-35. Josh Branch of Fontbonne and Brady Wildenradt (Delavan, Ill./HS) of Eureka each drained a trio of three-pointers to lead their respective squads with 12 first half points.
Both offenses came out of the locker rooms clicking as a total of 26 points were scored in less than five minutes to begin the second stanza. McComb moved EC in front again with a basket at the 16:47 mark, making the score 47-46.
Zasada, who recorded 12 points in just over six minutes to start the half, gave the Red Devils their largest lead of the day at 55-51 after draining a triple with 13:46 remaining. But, Eureka would go the next 5:30 without scoring as Fontbonne took a 62-55 advantage.
The drought was ended was a big step-back three-pointer by Craig Black (Sullivan, Ill./HS) that just beat the shot clock. The Red Devils would get no closer than four points the rest of the way, however. The Griffins connected on 11-of-13 at the line in the second half to stretch out the lead over the final minutes. Fontbonne took its first double digit lead on the day with just over one minute to play before settling for a 81-70 decision.
Zasada's 24 points eclipsed his previous high of 20 set last Saturday versus Maryville, which led to his SLIAC Player of the Week Award for last week. He also tied for game-high honors with eight rebounds. McComb dished out a career-high nine assists in addition to carding 17 points. Wildenradt finished with 12 points and four assists.
