Boxscore attached

EUREKA — The Eureka Red Devils beat the MacMurray College Highlanders at their own game Wednesday night.  The Highlanders came into the contest leading the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in made three-point field goals by a wide margin.  But they were bombarded with a 12-for-17 long range aerial attack in the second half by Eureka as the Red Devils blew open a close game at halftime to win 88-64.

Brady Wildenradt (Delavan, Ill./HS) and James Kowalski (El Paso, Ill./El Paso-Gridley) led the barrage, connecting on 5-of-6 and 4-of-5 three-point attempts respectively after halftime.  The two combined for 29 of Eureka's (8-13, 8-5 SLIAC) 50 second half points.

Overall, the Red Devils spread the wealth offensively with six players chipping in toward a total of 16 made triples out of 28 attempts.  Meanwhile, MacMurray (3-18, 1-12 SLIAC) was clicking at just 17 percent (5-for-30) efficiency from long range, including a 2-for-16 effort after halftime.

Eureka jumped out to an early 20-12 lead only to see the Highlanders fight back to tie the game on four occasions before finally taking a 37-34 lead on an Adam Martinez trey with 3:18 to go before halftime.  Those would be the last points of the half for MacMurray as two late free throws by Matt McComb (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley) would stake EC to a narrow 38-37 lead at intermission.

The Highlanders held a brief 42-41 advantage in the first minute of the second frame before Eureka took over for good.  Four different Red Devils connected from behind the arc during a 16-4 push that gave Eureka double digit lead for the first time at 57-46 with 13:21 remaining.

MacMurray responded by recording the next six markers to slice its deficit to five, but Eureka put the game out of reach in a hurry after that.  Wildenradt canned three treys and Kowalski added a pair during a 16-2 EC run that made the score 73-54 at the 5:30 mark.

The Red Devils would go on to lead by as many as 25 following the last of Wildenradt's career-high 20 points in the final minute.  He made six three-pointers and 7-of-9 field goal tries in all, while also dishing out five assists.  Kowalski had 14 points and five boards.

Mark Darnall (Lake Mills, Wis./HS) tallied 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists. He was a perfect 3-for-3 from long range.  McComb finished with 11 points, seven caroms and six assists.  Michael Zasada (McHenry, Ill./HS) made it four Red Devils in double figures with 14 points.  Seth McCoy (Piper City, Ill./Tri-Point) helped EC to a 35-32 rebounding advantage with a team-high nine boards.

Neil Compton had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead MacMurray.  The Highlanders gave away just two more turnovers than Eureka, but were outscored 29-10 in points off turnovers.

Eureka concludes a brief two-game homestand Saturday, Feb. 16 with a match up against Westminster College at 1:00 pm.  Westminster won the first meeting at home by the count of 66-52.  It will be a key battle in the conference with Eureka being in fourth place and Westminster in third in the SLIAC standings.
