1993-94 Red Devils inducted into
IBCA Hall of Fame

May 8, 2007

EUREKA, Ill. — The 1993-94 NAIA II National Championship Eureka College men's basketball team was recently inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Led by Head Coach Dave Darnall, the Red Devils finished with a school record 27-4 overall record.

The Red Devils were only the second team from Illinois to win a NAIA National Basketball Championship. They were undefeated both at home and in the Chicagoland Conference. Eureka led all of NAIA II in rebounding and scoring margin, while ranking second in three-point field goal percentage. At the time, Eureka held dual membership in NAIA II and NCAA III, but competed in postseason play in NAIA II. EC led NCAA III in three-point percentage and was second in scoring margin.

In addition to Darnall, who announced his retirement after the season ending a 20-year stint as Eureka head coach with a 383-151 record, the squad featured three future Eureka College Athletic Hall of Fame inductees, along with assistant coach Stan Prosser. Chris Peterson (653), Troy Tyler (613), and Chris Eaton (610) are the only Red Devil players to ever score over 600 points in the season and they all did so during the 1993-94 campaign. Eaton was named the NAIA II National Player of the Year and First Team All-American. He is still Eureka's all-time leading rebounder with 925.

Eureka's all-time leading scorer with 2,119 points, Tyler was selected as First Team NAIA II Academic All-American and Second Team All-American. Peterson was the MVP of the National Tournament, while Darnall was tabbed as National Coach of the Year. The Red Devils topped Northern State University of South Dakota 98-95 in overtime in the championship game.
