Bell Helps Eureka Shoot Down Greenville, 98-87
EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College senior guard Kameron Bell (Clinton, Ill./Clinton H.S./Carl Sandburg) recorded game-highs of 38 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Red Devils to their highest point total of the season in a 98-87 SLIAC win over Greenville, Thursday night at the Reagan Center.
For the second consecutive game, Eureka (4-3, 2-0 SLIAC) used a quick start to control a large portion of the first half. A layup from freshman center Mark Lessen (Delavan, Ill./Delvan H.S.) with 13:14 remaining in the first half broke an 11-11 tie and ignited a 25-8 Eureka run over the next 7-minutes, 19-seconds to give Eureka a commanding 36-19 lead. Bell scored 16 of his game-high 38 points during the run and knocked down four consecutive three-point field goal attempts in a span of 3-minutes, 33-seconds.
The Red Devils maintained the pressure throughout the remainder of the half and took their biggest lead in the final minute when a three-pointer from senior forward Michael Zasada (McHenry, Ill./McHenry H.S.) gave Eureka a 47-29 lead.
Eureka’s lead quickly ballooned to as many as 28 points after a three-pointer from sophomore guard Andy Leppard (Crescent City, Ill./Crescent-Iroquois H.S.) pushed the Red Devils in front 67-39 with 14:38 to play. Greenville (2-7, 0-2 SLIAC) refused to go away over the next several minutes, trimming its deficit to as little as 13 points after a layup from Rashod Seaton with 3:46 left for a 90-77 Eureka advantage. The Greenville rally was too little, too late, however, as Eureka maintained its double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest.
Bell became the first Red Devil to score at least 30 points and grab at least 10 rebounds in a game since Chris Tarpley recorded 32 points and 19 rebounds in a 95-81 win over MacMurray on Feb. 23, 2007. He finished the game 16-for-22 from the field and 4-for-7 from three-point range. Zasada added 16 points and 11 rebounds. Eureka shot a season-best 55.2 percent from the field and matched its season-high with 10 three-pointers. The Red Devils also grabbed a season-best 49 rebounds. Greenville’s LaPhonso Ellis scored 24 points to lead the visitors.
The 98 points scored by Eureka was its highest scoring output since a 108-107 loss at Monmouth on Nov. 25, 2000. Thursday’s victory, coupled with a 75-70 win earlier in the evening by the Eureka women’s team, gives the Red Devils their first SLIAC doubleheader sweep since Jan. 21, 2009 at MacMurray. The Eureka men have now won three games in a row.
Eureka will close its current three-game homestand next Tuesday when Knox visits for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff at the Reagan Center.
