Bell Rallies Eureka Past Rockford, 91-90

Box Score

ROCKFORD, Ill. – Eureka College senior guard Kameron Bell (Clinton, Ill./Clinton H.S./Carl Sandburg) scored a career-high 44 points and made a critical three-point field goal in the final moments of the game, leading the Red Devils to a come-from-behind 91-90 win over Rockford, Wednesday night at Seaver Center in Rockford, Ill.

Clinging to an 88-87 lead with less than a minute remaining, Bell buried a three-pointer from the left wing with the shot clock winding down to give the Red Devils a 91-87 lead with 12 seconds remaining.  Rockford’s Andrew Weber answered with a trey as time expired, but the basket wasn’t enough as the Red Devils held on for the win.

The Red Devils trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half before Eureka began chipping away at Rockford’s lead.  A three-pointer from senior forward Michael Zasada (McHenry, Ill./McHenry H.S.) with 12:55 remaining jump-started a 7-0 Eureka run to bring Eureka within eight points at 62-54.

Eureka outscored Rockford 33-17 in a span of 9-minutes, 6-seconds midway through the second half before a three-pointer from sophomore guard Jordan Kindred (Chrisman, Ill./Chrisman H.S.) gave the Red Devils an 80-79 lead with 3:58 remaining, their first advantage of the game.  The lead changed hands four more times before a layup from Kindred with 2:07 remaining gave Eureka the lead for the remainder of the game.

The Regents had a chance to take the lead in the final minute of the game after a steal from Weber, but Danny Armelin was whistled for an offensive foul on his layup attempt, giving the ball back to the Red Devils with 43 seconds remaining.

Bell’s 44 points were a career-high, topping his previous best of 27 set last January at MacMurray.  He was 17-for-28 from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.  Zasada finished the contest with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, the only player to record a double-double.  Kindred added 19 points and seven rebounds.  Eureka shot a blistering 64.5 percent from the field in the second half and 49.3 percent for the game.

Robert Malone poured in 35 points on 16-of-19 shooting to lead Rockford.  Taylor Stinson scored 19, while Armelin added 12.

The Red Devils will return to action Saturday night at Division I foe Eastern Illinois.  Tipoff in Charleston, Ill. is scheduled for 6 p.m.
