Eureka Falls Short at Spalding, 79-75
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Eureka College senior forward Michael Zasada (McHenry, Ill./McHenry H.S.) led a group of four Red Devils to score in double-figures with 20 points, but Spalding sophomore Dewhon McAfee scored a game-high 32 points to help the Golden Eagles hang on for a 79-75 win over Eureka, Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Ky.
McAfee gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good with his jumper for a 57-55 lead with 9:44 to go. Spalding’s advantage swelled to as many as 10 points in the second half (68-58), but Eureka sophomore guard Jordan Kindred (Chrisman, Ill./Chrisman H.S.) made a pair of foul shots with 2:00 remaining to trim Eureka’s late deficit to three points, 76-73.
The Red Devils recorded back-to-back defensive stops to give themselves a chance to shoot for the tie in the final minute, but Eureka’s three-point attempt was off the mark with 21 seconds left. Spalding made three free throws in the final minute and allowed a layup to Kindred with 12 seconds left, holding on for a four-point win.
Kindred finished with 16 points and dished out a career-high nine assists, while senior guard Kameron Bell (Clinton, Ill./Clinton H.S./Carl Sandburg) and sophomore guard Andy Leppard (Crescent City, Ill./Crescent-Iroquois H.S.) each scored 13 points.
Eureka will take a break from SLIAC play this Wednesday when Lincoln Christian visits the Reagan Center for an 8 p.m. non-conference tipoff. The Red Devils beat Lincoln Christian last month in Lincoln, 86-84.
