Eureka Pulls Away From Webster, 76-62
EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College sophomore guard Jordan Kindred (Chrisman, Ill./Chrisman H.S.) scored 15 points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds for the first double-double of his collegiate career, helping the Red Devils to a 76-62 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Webster, Saturday afternoon at the Reagan Center.
The Red Devils (13-7, 8-4 SLIAC) needed less than six minutes to build a double-digit lead, 14-3, behind seven early points from senior forward Michael Zasada (McHenry, Ill./McHenry H.S.). Eureka maintained its advantage at 11 points as late as the 10:22 mark of the first half when senior guard Kameron Bell (Clinton, Ill./Clinton H.S./Carl Sandburg) hit a three-pointer for a 19-8 lead. The Gorloks (10-11, 7-5 SLIAC) answered with nine straight points over the next 3-minutes, 56-seconds, and eventually forced a 21-21 tie at the 3:02 mark of the first half after a pair of free throws from John Ortwerth. The two teams exchanged the lead twice before Webster’s Robby Meeh scored with eight seconds left in the half to give Webster a 29-28 halftime lead.
Eureka sophomore guard Andy Leppard (Crescent City, Ill./Crescent-Iroquois H.S.) scored on Eureka’s first possession of the second half to trigger an 8-0 run for a 36-29 advantage, and the Red Devils would never trail again. Webster trimmed its deficit to as little as two points, 45-43, with 12:50 left in regulation, but Eureka answered with a 15-4 run to stretch its advantage to double-digits for the first time since the first half. Junior forward Josh Wagner (Roanoke, Ill./Roanoke-Benson H.S./Carl Sandburg) scored five straight points during the run, including a three-point play with 5:57 to go. Eureka led by as many as 17 points, 71-54, after a layup from Kindred with 1:35 left.
Bell scored a game-high 21 points and was joined by starters Zasada (18), Kindred (15) and Leppard (11) in double-figures. Kindred led all players with 10 rebounds, followed closely by Bell with eight and Zasada with seven. Cory Bradfisch came off the bench to knock down three three-pointers and lead the Gorloks with 13 points.
The victory, coupled with MacMurray’s 74-70 loss at Spalding, pushes Eureka into a second-place tie with MacMurray at 8-4 in the league. Webster dropped to 7-5 after Saturday’s decision for fourth place with four league games to go in the regular season.
Eureka will play on the road for the first time since Jan. 20 when the Red Devils visit Principia on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Eureka routed the Panthers on Jan. 23 at the Reagan Center, 93-67, behind a triple-double from Bell.
