Fontbonne Beats Eureka at the Horn, 94-93

Box Score

EUREKA, Ill. – Fontbonne sophomore forward Nolan Zoellner hit a three-pointer from the left wing as time expired, pushing Fontbonne to a 94-93 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Eureka College, Saturday afternoon at the Reagan Center.  Eureka senior forward Michael Zasada (McHenry, Ill./McHenry H.S.) scored a career-high 36 points to lead the Red Devils.

After Fontbonne’s Jonothan Melloway made a three-pointer to tie the game at 91-91 with 32 seconds remaining, Eureka used a full timeout with 11 seconds left to draw up its chance to take the lead.  Eureka sophomore guard Jordan Kindred (Chrisman, Ill./Chrisman H.S.) scored on a driving layup down the right side of the lane with 4.8 seconds remaining to give the Red Devils a 93-91 lead.  Fontbonne did not use a timeout and quickly moved the ball up the floor on the ensuing possession, as Zoellner provided the heroics with his third three-pointer of the day as the horn sounded for a 94-93 win.

The Red Devils trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half after Jahmall Thomas scored with 19:09 remaining in regulation to give the Griffins a 50-33 lead.  Eureka immediately fought back, using a 10-2 surge over the next 2-minutes, 13-seconds to draw within single-digits, 52-43, for the first time since the 2:00 mark of the first half.  Fontbonne was able to push its lead back to 13 points (64-51) with 13:53 remaining before the Red Devils rallied again.  Eureka used a 22-8 run capped by a basket from junior forward Josh Wagner (Roanoke, Ill./Roanoke-Benson H.S./Carl Sandburg) for a 70-69 lead with 8:50 left, the first advantage for the Red Devils since leading 21-20.  Eureka led by as many as four points, 79-75, after a basket from senior guard Kameron Bell (Clinton, Ill./Clinton H.S./Carl Sandburg) with 5:05 left.

The final five minutes of the contest featured five ties and seven lead changes, and Fontbonne never led by more than a point in the final 9-minutes, 24-seconds.  In all, the Red Devils and Griffins traded the lead 14 times over the course of the game and were tied on seven occasions.  Eureka controlled the rebounding battle throughout the contest, holding a 37-19 advantage on the glass.  The Griffins turned the ball over only six times, the fewest turnovers by a Eureka opponent this season.

Zasada finished the contest with 36 points for a new career-high.  He knocked down five three-point baskets, his best effort from beyond the arc since making six treys at Maryville on Jan. 3, 2009.  He added 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double in his last six games.  Bell scored 16 points and collected eight boards, while sophomore guard Andy Leppard (Crescent City, Ill./Crescent-Iroquois H.S.) scored in double-figures for the fourth consecutive game with 15 points.  Fontbonne’s Chris Forrest scored 26 points in the first half before finishing the contest with a team-high 35.  Zoellner finished with 18 points on 6-for-7 shooting.  A total of four Griffins scored in double-figures.

The Red Devils will return to SLIAC competition this Wednesday at 8 p.m. against Blackburn, the fourth game of a season-long five-game homestand.
