MacMurray Downs Eureka in Overtime, 95-93
EUREKA, Ill. – MacMurray junior guard CJ McClellan buried an 18-foot jumper from just to the right of the top of key with 3.0 seconds remaining, breaking a 93-93 tie and pushing the Highlanders to a come-from-behind 95-93 SLIAC overtime victory over Eureka College, Wednesday night at the Reagan Center. Eureka’s defeat snaps a five-game home win streak.
After the Red Devils (11-6, 6-3 SLIAC) missed a scoring opportunity that would have given them the lead with 28 seconds remaining, the Highlanders called timeout with 16.4 seconds remaining to set up their chance to win the game. McClellan provided the heroics with his fifth basket of the night. The Red Devils used their final timeout to draw up a play in the final 3.0 seconds, but a running 35-footer from sophomore guard Jordan Kindred (Chrisman, Ill./Chrisman H.S.) glanced off the left side of the rim as time expired.
McClellan was the hero in regulation as well. Trailing by three points, 87-84, McClallen made his only three-point basket of the night with 12 seconds remaining to force an 87-87 tie. Eureka used a timeout with 6 seconds remaining, but a turnover ended the ensuing possession before the Red Devils could shoot for the win in regulation.
The Red Devils seized control of the contest midway through the second half after Kindred found senior forward Michael Zasada (McHenry, Ill./McHenry H.S.) for a thunderous alley-oop dunk to put Eureka in front, 65-48, with 13:35 left in regulation. MacMurray slowly battled back, getting within single digits for the first time since the 10:20 mark of the first half when Zac Ozee made a pair of free throws with 8:30 left to make the score 77-68 in favor of Eureka.
MacMurray (6-10, 6-3 SLIAC) tied the game at 81-81 with 3:36 remaining after a three-point play from Marc Randle, but two free throws from Eureka senior guard Kameron Bell (Clinton, Ill./Clinton H.S./Carl Sandburg) and a basket from Kindred bumped the Eureka advantage back to four points, 85-81, with 2:22 left in regulation. MacMurray answered with a three-pointer from Adam Polston before Zasada made a pair of foul shots for an 87-84 advantage with 1:22 left. Neither team would score again until McClellan connected on the trey with 12 seconds left to force overtime.
Zasada recorded game-highs with 24 points and 15 rebounds, his 10th double-double of the season. Bell added 23 points and 12 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the campaign, while Kindred chipped in with 17 points and dished out a career-high seven assists in 45 minutes of action. Sophomore guard Andy Leppard (Crescent City, Ill./Crescent-Iroquois H.S.) was the fourth Red Devil to score in double-figures with 13 points. The Red Devils held a 40-27 rebounding advantage, the 13th time in 17 games this season they have grabbed more rebounds than their opponent. Brady Slagle scored 21 points to lead MacMurray.
Eureka will continue its current five-game homestand this Saturday at 3 p.m. against Fontbonne.
