Seniors Lead Eureka Past Millikin, 71-57
EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College seniors Kameron Bell (Clinton, Ill./Clinton H.S./Carl Sandburg) and Michael Zasada (McHenry, Ill./McHenry H.S.) combined to score 33 points and pull down 28 rebounds, keying the Red Devils to a 71-57 non-conference triumph over Millikin, Saturday night at the Reagan Center.
The Red Devils (3-3) fell behind in the early going before a three-pointer from junior guard Craig Black (Sullivan, Ill./Sullivan H.S.) sparked a 17-0 Eureka burst for a 20-6 lead. Black, who was making his first start of the season, scored eight of his career-high 13 points in the first nine minutes of the game. The Red Devils maintained a comfortable advantage throughout the remainder of the half, stretching their lead to as many as 17 after a layup from sophomore guard Andy Leppard (Crescent City, Ill./Crescent-Iroquois) gave Eureka a 35-18 advantage with 2:13 remaining. Eureka led 37-23 at the break.
Millikin (2-3) started the half with five unanswered points to trim its deficit to single-digits (37-28), but Zasada answered with a layup on the ensuing possession and the Eureka lead wouldn’t dip below double-digits for the remainder of the contest. The Big Blue refused to go away, however, when Joscar Demby scored with 5:38 remaining to bring the visitors back within 10 points (58-48).
Eureka maintained its composure down the stretch, outscoring the visitors 13-9 over the final four minutes. Millikin missed 11 of its final 15 shots in its comeback bid.
Zasada and Bell played fantastic games in the victory. Zasada scored a game-high 17 points and has now scored in double-figures in each of the first six games this season. He added 14 rebounds. Bell, who has also scored in double-figures in all six outings, added 16 points and match Zasada for game-high honors with 14 boards. Both Zasada and Bell recorded four assists. Leppard and sophomore guard Jordan Kindred (Chrisman, Ill./Chrisman H.S.) scored nine points in the win, as the Red Devils shot a season-best 52.9 percent from the floor for the game.
The win is Eureka’s second in a row. The Red Devils will remain home at the Reagan Center for the middle game of a three-game homestand this Thursday against SLIAC opponent Greenville at 8 p.m.
