Zasada Named SLIAC Player of the Year, Bell Second Team
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Eureka College senior forward Michael Zasada (McHenry, Ill./McHenry H.S.) has been named the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, the league announced during a ceremony prior to the conference tournament championship game last Saturday. Zasada was also a member of the All-SLIAC First Team, and senior guard Kameron Bell (Clinton, Ill./Clinton H.S./Carl Sandburg) was chosen for the All-SLIAC Second Team.
The only four-year player on the Eureka roster, Zasada led the SLIAC in scoring (21.4 PPG) and rebounding (9.9 RPG) during his senior season. He also finished second in minutes played (34.4 MPG), fourth in blocked shots (1.19 BPG), fifth in field goal percentage (.516), eighth in free throw percentage (.724), eighth in steals (1.59 SPG) and ninth three-point field goal percentage (.380). Zasada was also an All-SLIAC First Team choice as a junior last season.
Zasada finished his career ranked second on the all-time Eureka rebounding list with 863 rebounds, passing current Eureka baseball coach Craig Gerdes for the second spot on the list during Saturday’s SLIAC championship game. He also ended his collegiate career high on Eureka’s all-time scoring list, finishing with 1,329 points for eighth place all-time. His senior season total of 579 points ranked tied for fourth on the Eureka single-season list, and his 266 rebounds in 2009-10 were fourth-most on the Eureka single-season list.
Bell also turned in one of the best offensive seasons in Eureka history, scoring 564 points for the ninth-highest single-season total in the 88-year history of the program. His scoring average of 20.9 points per game ranked second in the league only behind Zasada, while Bell’s rebounding average of 8.7 boards per game ranked fourth among league players. He also ranked among the league leaders in steals (third, 1.74 SPG), field goal percentage (seventh, .510) and minutes played (eighth, 32.9 MPG). He recorded Eureka’s only triple-double on record when he recorded 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in Eureka’s 93-67 win over Principia on Jan. 23. Bell was an All-SLIAC Honorable Mention selection last season.
Eureka finished the 2009-10 season with a 17-10 overall record, matching the 2003-04 team for the most wins by the Red Devils since the 1993-94 team won 27 games en route to the NAIA Division II national championship.
