Eureka Basketball Opens Tuesday at the Reagan Center
EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka College women’s and men’s basketball teams will open their 2011-12 seasons with non-conference games on Tuesday night at the Reagan Center. The Eureka women will host Robert Morris-Springfield at 5 p.m., followed by the Eureka men in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off against North Park.
Under the direction of second-year head coach Taren Martin, the Eureka women will begin the 37th season in program history on Tuesday against the USCAA-affiliated Eagles. All five starters and a total of 10 letterwinners return from last season’s that squad that finished 9-15 overall. The Red Devils posted a 5-11 record in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and their sixth-place finish was Eureka’s best in the league since the 2006-07 season. Seven newcomers will be in uniform in Tuesday’s opener, giving Martin 17 healthy players to start the year and one of the largest rosters in program history. The Red Devils dropped a 79-58 exhibition decision at NCAA Division II Maryville (Mo.) on Sunday in St. Louis.
Eureka is scheduled to play 24 games this season, including a two-game trip to Las Vegas, Nev. for contests against Concordia (Wis.) (Dec. 27) and Simpson (Dec. 29) in the D3Hoops.com Classic at the South Point Hotel and Casino. The Red Devils will open the annual 16-game SLIAC schedule on Nov. 30 at the Reagan Center against Greenville.
Chip Wilde will begin his fifth season as head coach of the men’s squad when Eureka welcomes College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin foe North Park on Tuesday. Nine letterman return for the Red Devils from last season, while Wilde will welcome six junior college transfers and four incoming freshman to bring the roster to 19 players. The 2011-12 season marks the 91st season of men’s basketball at Eureka College, and the Red Devils are scheduled to play the 2,000th game in program history at Webster on Feb. 4 in St. Louis.
The Red Devils have a full 25-game schedule and will make a pair of trips to NCAA Division I opponents in 2011-12. Eureka will visit Eastern Illinois for the second time in three seasons on Nov. 23 and will also travel to Western Illinois on Dec. 27 for its second matchup with the Leathernecks since 2008-09. The Red Devils will open the annual 16-game SLIAC schedule on Nov. 30 at the Reagan Center against Greenville.
The top four teams in the final SLIAC standings -- excluding NCAA Division III provisional member Spalding -- will advance to the league’s annual postseason tournament hosted by the regular season champion in late February. The Eureka men will be shooting for their third trip to the tournament, the most by any Eureka program since joining the SLIAC in 2006.
