Eureka Rally Stopped Short at MacMurray, 76-63

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – MacMurray senior guard C.J. McClellan scored a game-high 24 points and his jumper midway through the second half ended a lengthy Eureka run, lifting the Highlanders to a 76-63 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Red Devils, Tuesday night in Jacksonville, Ill.

Trailing by 12 in the first minute of the second half, 42-30, Eureka began slowly chipping away at its deficit.  A bucket from Eureka senior forward Josh Wagner (Roanoke, Ill./Roanoke-Benson H.S./Carl Sandburg) sparked a 15-6 Eureka run over the next eight minutes.  Eureka senior Craig Black (Sullivan, Ill./Sullivan H.S.) scored five of his nine points during the stretch before sophomore Jake Kuenzl (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley H.S.) drilled a 3-pointer to end the stretch with the Red Devils trailing 48-45 with 11:20 left in the game.

McClellan answered with a basket on the next MacMurray possession and the hosts’ lead wouldn’t dip below five points again.

In the first half, Eureka led by as many as four points, 19-15, on a 3-point basket by junior Austin Nicholas (Brownsburg, Ind./Manitou Springs H.S./Lamar) with 11:47 left before halftime.  MacMurray regained the lead for the seventh time of the half, 27-26, on Dylan Burton’s basket with 5:09 left before the Highlanders ended the half on a high note and carried a 37-28 lead into intermission.

Playing his final collegiate game, Black scored nine points.  Wagner scored four points and grabbed eight rebounds in his last game and senior Cody Myers (Ipava, Ill./V.I.T. H.S.) scored two points and added two boards in his final outing.  Sophomore center Mark Lessen (Delavan, Ill./Delavan H.S.) led the visitors with 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.  Nicholas added 13 points and knocked three 3-pointers.

The defeat ends Eureka’s season with a 4-21 overall record and a 2-14 SLIAC mark.  MacMurray will carry the #3 seed into this weekend’s SLIAC Tournament against #2 Westminster Friday night in St. Louis.
