Men's Basketball to Play 2,000th Game Saturday
EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka College men’s basketball team will play the 2,000th game in program history when the Red Devils visit Webster for a 3 p.m. St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tip-off on Saturday in St. Louis, Mo. The 2011-12 campaign marks the 91st season of Eureka men’s basketball.
The Red Devils became the 85th team in the history of NCAA Division III to win 1,000 games when Eureka topped Blackburn in overtime, 109-105, on Jan. 20, 2010 in Carlinville, Ill. The Red Devils will enter Saturday’s matchup at Webster with 1,022 all-time victories, the most by any current member of the SLIAC.
The crown jewel of Eureka’s celebrated men’s basketball history remains the 1994 NAIA Division II national championship. The Red Devils set a school record with 27 victories that season, while the trio of Chris Peterson (653), Troy Tyler (613) and Chris Eaton (610) compiled the three highest single-season point totals in program history. Tyler would become the program’s all-time leading scorer that season with 2,119 points, while Eaton set the single-season rebounding record (363) to become the program’s all-time leading rebounder with 925 career boards.
The 1993-94 season marked the 20th and final year of the head coaching run of Eureka College Athletics Hall of Famer Dave Darnall, who closed his career with 383 victories, the most by any head coach in the history of Eureka College athletics. Darnall directed the Red Devils to four NAIA national tournament appearances and all nine of the 20-win seasons in Eureka men’s basketball history.
This season, the Red Devils are 12-8 overall and right in the thick of the hunt for a SLIAC Tournament berth with a 9-3 conference record. Five regular season games remain on the 2011-12 schedule, including home contests against Lincoln Christian on Feb. 8 and Fontbonne on Feb. 11.
