Men's Soccer Drops Opener to Spalding, 10-0
EUREKA, Ill. – Spalding forward Colin Peters scored three times in the first 32 minutes of Saturday’s season-opening match against the Eureka College men’s soccer team, leading the visiting Golden Eagles to a 10-0 victory over the Red Devils at Traister Field.
Peters tallied the match-winning goal just 7:55 into the afternoon on an assist from Evan Childers. He followed with goals in the 14th minute and 32nd minute to help the visitors build a 3-0 halftime lead. Spalding held a 19-5 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes.
Back-to-back goals in a span of 108 seconds from Stephen Hubert early in the second half ignited a seven-goal outburst by Spalding after intermission. Peters added his fourth strike in the 52nd minute.
Eureka juniors Tom Moody (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey H.S.) and Kirby Wagner (Roanoke, Ill./Roanoke-Benson H.S./St. Ambrose) each put shots on target in the loss. The decision marks the second consecutive season the Red Devils have opened the season with a loss.
The Red Devils will continue non-conference action Sunday at Lake Forest. Kickoff versus the Foresters is scheduled for 3 p.m.
