Boxscore
WOMEN'S SOCCER
The Eureka College women's soccer program remained unbeaten at home Saturday with a convincing 7-1 triumph over Knox College. The Red Devils evened their mark on the year at 2-2, while Knox fell to 0-3.
Kate Huizinga (Downers Grove, Ill./South) netted the first of her four goals on the day less than four minutes into the game giving the Red Devils a lead they would not relinquish. Eureka totaled four goals in the first 17:47 to run out to a 4-0 advantage. Ashley Samuels (Batavia, Ill./Aurora Central Catholic) and KT Zapushek (Metamora, Ill./HS) chipped in single tallies in addition to Huizinga's two.
The Red Devils shot a high percentage for the game, scoring four goals on 11 shots in the first half and seven goals on 19 shots overall.
Jessica Bundy (Metamora, Ill./HS) maneuvered around three defenders brilliantly before feeding a pass to Huizinga for her third marker early in the second half making the score 5-0. Knox got on the board with just under 15 minutes to play by scoring directly off an Emma Bell Bern corner kick.
Huizinga and Zapushek each added their fifth goals in the last two games later to give EC a final 7-1 margin. The two combined for six goals on just nine shots. Samuels was the only player credited with multiple assists with two.
MEN'S SOCCER
Boxscore
Despite significant line up changes and additional depth added to the roster, the Eureka men's team was again unable to mount substantial offensive pressure in a 3-0 set back against Knox College Saturday.
The Prairie Fire (2-2) led in shots on goal 20-1, but Eureka (0-3) was able to keep a reasonable deficit all game long thanks to stellar work deep in its own end led by goalkeeper Garin Pisano (Metamora, Ill./HS). The sophomore stopped 17 shots on the day, including several of the highlight variety.
Also adding to the degree of difficulty was the fact that the Red Devils played the final 35 minutes a man down as eight cards were handed out in the heated affair, with seven shown to Eureka.
Knox scored twice in the opening 10:48 for a 2-0 lead, but not again until the 68th minute to provide the final count of 3-0.
The Eureka soccer squads will hit the road Wednesday, Sept. 12 for a non-conference doubleheader at Blackburn College. The women's game will commence at 2:00 pm with the men's contest to follow at
4:00 pm.
