O'Malley nets 1st goal in loss to Illinois College
Boxscore
EUREKA — The Eureka men's soccer team played a plucky first half to stay right with a relentless Illinois College side before finally succumbing to the Blueboys' pressure 6-2 Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils (0-3) were out-shot 26-3 in the opening frame, but EC goalkeeper Justin Horrer (Hopedale, Ill./Olympia) made 13 saves before intermission to keep Illinois College (1-2) at bay. The Blueboys found the scoresheet for the only time in the half in the 36th minute from short range off of a corner kick.
The IC lead would prove to be short-lived as a turnover in the Blueboys' end led to a breakout for David Doubet (Pekin, Ill./HS). He easily beat the keeper to tie the game at 1-1 with just over seven minutes left before halftime. Derek Johnson (Leland, Ill./HS) picked up the assist on the play.
Illinois College went on to take the lead in the 51st minute, and stretched the lead to 4-1 before the Red Devils could answer. Brian O'Malley (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) recorded his first goal of the season with 16:33 remaining to bring Eureka within 4-2.
But the Maroon and Gold would get no closer as the visitors tacked on a pair of tallies late for a 6-2 decision. Horrer finished the game with 19 saves on 25 shots on goal. Doubet registered three shots on goal, becoming the first player in team history to score a goal in back-to-back games.
Eureka is set to continue its three-game homestand Monday, Sept. 8 at 4:30 pm with a non-conference match up with Lincoln Christian College.
