O'Malley's 2 goals too little, too late in sLIAC opener

Boxscore

EUREKA — Going into Tuesday's SLIAC league opener at Eureka, the Greenville College men's soccer team had allowed two goals in five non-conference outings. Eureka's Brian O'Malley (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) matched that total in just the final six minutes of the game, but it was too little, too late for the Red Devils as the Panthers took an 8-3 decision.

The Red Devils (1-6, 0-1 SLIAC), who were shutout twice by Greenville (5-0-1, 1-0 SLIAC) last season, took the lead three minutes into the match on a goal by Derek Johnson (Leland, Ill./HS). David Doubet (Pekin, Ill./HS) picked up the assist as EC took a 1-0 lead.

The unbeaten Panthers responded quickly, with Matt Reeb tying the score 32 seconds later and Brian Limbaugh lifting GC a lead it would not give up 2:09 after that.

Greenville scored on six of its 11 shots in the first half for a 6-1 advantage. Both sides scored twice in the second half.

The Panther goals came in the 64th and 72nd minutes. O'Malley beat the goalkeeper with 5:41 and 0:28 remaining for Eureka's tallies. Doubet was credited with his second assist on of the day on a nifty throw-in on O'Malley's first goal. The Red Devils became the first team to score multiple goals against Greenville this season.

Eureka will stay in league play Saturday, Sept. 20 with a road game at Maryville University starting at 2:00 pm.
