Red Devils notch back-to-back wins by topping Eagles 3-2

Boxscore

Eureka College avenged a heart-breaking loss at the hands of the Eagles of Robert Morris-Springfield last season by taking a hard-fought 3-2 decision Saturday. The win was the first ever road victory for EC men's soccer.

Brian O'Malley (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) scored two goals and assisted on the eventual game-winner by David Doubet (Pekin, Ill./HAS), which gave Eureka (3-9) a 3-1 lead at the time. The Eagles (2-9), who scored with 16 seconds left in regulation to escape Eureka with a 1-0 victory last season, got within 3-2 with just over eight minutes to play, but ran out of late game heroics this time.

O'Malley got EC on the board quickly, finding the back of the net on a penalty kick 4:03 after kickoff. Justin Sharp tied the game in the 17th minute for Robert Morris, only to see O'Malley strike back just before halftime as he sliced his way through a host of Eagles defenders en route to his 11th tally of the 2008 campaign.

Eureka expanded the lead in the 56th minute. Doubet found room on the left side of the goal, directing a long pass from Derek Johnson (Leland, Ill./HAS) across the goal line for a 3-1 EC advantage.

The Red Devils were cruising toward back-to-back wins until just over 20 minutes to go when a red card forced Eureka to play a man down for the remainder of the contest. Robert Morris took advantage, collecting a 6-4 second half edge in shots on goal.

The Eagles finally climbed to within 3-2 with 8:04 to play, but the Eureka defense would keep them at bay the rest of the way to preserve the one goal margin. It was Eureka's first one-goal win all-time in six total decisions.

O'Malley led all players with six shots. Mike Hubbard's (Wataga, Ill./ROWVA) five shots were highlighted by almost converting a bicycle kick goal in the second half. Johnson recorded four shots, matching O'Malley with two on goal. Justin Horrer (Hopedale, Ill./Olympia) made eight saves as the Eureka keeper.

Eureka will next host Monmouth College, Monday, October 6 for a non-conference game beginning at 4:00 pm.
