Fighting Scots invade eureka, take 3-0 decision
Boxscore
Eureka College saw its two-game men's soccer winning streak come to an end Monday, falling 3-0 to visiting Monmouth College. The Red Devils generated several scoring chances against the defensive-minded Fighting Scots, but simply could not find the back of the net.
Monmouth (2-8) got on the board twice in the opening half. Josh Del Valle booted home the first goal in the 16th minute, then Joe Howell converted a penalty kick with 6:37 remaining in the stanza.
The Red Devils (3-10), who registered four shots with one on goal in the first half, had five shots and two on goal after the intermission. Monmouth keeper Owen Robinson picked up the shutout by making three saves. His toughest chance perhaps came against Eureka's David Doubet (Pekin, Ill./HS), who charged in on the Scots' goal in the second half only to see his airborne attempt speared by the keeper.
Brian O'Malley (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) and Derek Johnson (Leland, Ill./HS) also recorded a shot on goal for EC. Justin Horrer (Hopedale, Ill./Olympia) stopped nine shots, while the Eureka defense did a respectable job keeping the Monmouth shots from long range. The Scots fired 27 shots, with 12 being on frame.
The Red Devils will next play the middle contest of their three-game homestand Wednesday, October 8 beginning at 3:00 pm. Maryville University, which topped Eureka 6-0 on September 20, will be the opposing side.
