EC dropped by Maryville for 2nd time after scoreless 1st half

Boxscore

The Eureka College men's soccer team fell for the second time this season to Maryville University by the score of 4-0 Wednesday afternoon. But unlike the prior meeting on September 20 in which the Red Devils slumped to a 4-0 halftime deficit en route to a 6-0 defeat, Eureka battled Maryville to a scoreless draw in the first half this time.

The Red Devils (3-11) survived being out-shot 16-4 in the opening stanza by forcing long range or hurried attempts. Maryville (5-7-2) put just a quarter of its 16 shots on goal, which were all corralled by EC goalkeeper Justin Horrer (Hopedale, Ill./Olympia).

Eureka put forth a spirited effort after halftime as well, trimming its shots disadvantage to 12-8 and putting four shots on goal. The Red Devils also tied Maryville in the second half in corner kicks with two.

Matt O'Daniel gave Maryville the only goal it would need less than four minutes into the second frame, then added a second tally just 2:37 later for a 2-0 edge. The Saints went on to add to their lead in the 70th and 86th minutes.

Brian O'Malley (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) led EC with five shots. He was one of four Red Devils with a shot on goal. Mike Hubbard (Wataga, Ill./ROWVA) carded two, while David Doubet (Pekin, Ill./HS) and Evan Kingery (Heyworth, Ill./HS) had one each.

Next on the schedule for Eureka is SLIAC rival Webster University. The Gorloks will travel to Eureka for a 3:00 pm kickoff on Saturday, October 11.
