Stubborn red devils finally yield 3-0 to 1st place principia

Boxscore

A plucky Eureka College side gave SLIAC-leading Principia College a tussle on its home pitch Saturday before the Panthers extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games in a 3-0 decision.

Principia (11-3-2, 5-0-1 SLIAC), which captured both the league's regular season and tournament crowns last year, saw the Red Devils (3-14, 1-5 SLIAC) hang around within one goal for over 10 minutes into the second half.

Making his first start at goalkeeper for Eureka, Mike Hubbard (Wataga, Ill./ROWVA) did his best to limit the damage caused by a 17-2 Principia advantage in shots in the first half. The EC freshman allowed just one shot to pass by into the goal, while making eight saves by halftime.

The Panthers increased their lead to 2-0 in the 56th minute, then put the game out of reach at 3-0 with just under 20 minutes remaining. The Red Devils' attack was held off the board by four saves by Samuel Thomas. Eureka's Brian O'Malley (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) put a great ball on frame in the second half only to see Thomas cement the fact that it was the Panthers' day with a fantastic save.

Jamal Layne (Arima, Trinidad/Northgate) and David Doubet (Pekin, Ill./HS) joined O'Malley with two shots in the match. Hubbard wound up with 11 saves after a quieter second half. The Red Devils have now played all six conference opponents to closer scores than last year. They have two league matches left this season.
