Eureka explodes for record 8 goals in win over lincoln christian
Boxscore
The Red Devils men's soccer team completed a season series sweep of Lincoln Christian College Monday, subduing the Preachers 8-2 on the road. Eureka's David Crady (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) picked up his first career hat trick, while assisting on two other goals to trumpet the EC charge.
Crady got Eureka (4-14) on the board in the 13th minute, then sent a pass to Jamal Layne (Arima, Trinidad/Northgate), who made the score 2-0 in favor of EC in the 30th minute. Brian O'Malley (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) and David Doubet (Pekin, Ill./HS) picked up assists on the first goal, and would factor into Eureka goal count later.
Jake Jacobson (Eureka, Ill./HS) one of just two seniors on the squad, lifted Eureka to a three-goal margin in the 37th minutes off a pass from O'Malley. Lincoln Christian got within 3-1 with less than seven minutes to play in the half, but that was enough time for the Red Devils to pad two goals onto their lead.
Mike Hubbard (Wataga, Ill./ROWVA) scored his first goal of the season in the 43rd minute. Next, O'Malley, who recorded his third assist of the half on Hubbard's goal, converted a penalty kick just before intermission, pushing the Eureka advantage to 5-1.
Lincoln Christian scored less than three minutes into the second half to get within 5-2. That is where the count stayed until EC scored the first of three unanswered tallies in the 74th minute. O'Malley first found the LCC net for the second time on the day with Doubet picking up his second helper. Crady followed with two goals to complete the hat trick. His first was unassisted, while Richie Gregory (Champaign, Ill./Judah Christian) had the assist on the second.
The eight goals set a single game record for Eureka. The Red Devils ran up an advantage of 17-6 in shots fired in the first half, which included an 11-1 spread in shots on goal. Both sides offered up seven shots and six on net after halftime. Justin Horrer (Hopedale, Ill./Olympia) turned away five Lincoln Christian shots in the second half as he carded his fourth win at goalkeeper for EC.
The Red Devils' two seniors, Jake Jacobson and Nick Fricano (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) will be honored before Eureka's next match as part of Senior Day. Fontbonne University will be the opposing side for the contest starting at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, October 22.
