Red Devils Fall in Overtime at Hanover, 5-4

Box Score

HANOVER, Ind. – Eureka College senior midfielder Brian O’Malley (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.) scored his second goal of the match to force a 4-4 tie in the 82nd minute, but Hanover’s Jake Stawick delivered the golden goal in the first overtime to give the Panthers a 5-4 victory over the Red Devils, Saturday afternoon at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.

After the Red Devils allowed back-to-back goals to fall behind 4-3, O’Malley scored from inside the box on an assist from junior David Crady (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora H.S.) to force the tie and push the match into overtime.  Stawick, who had already scored twice earlier in the contest, scored in the 99th minute to send Eureka to its first loss of the season.  Dylan Abrahamson assisted on the match-winner.

The Panthers (1-0-0) started the scoring in the 11th minute on a goal from Josh Ussiri.  O’Malley provided Eureka’s first tally in the 18th minute off a feed from classmate Serkan Bakirdan (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.).  Stawick scored just 26 seconds later to regain the lead for the hosts, but Bakirdan responded with back-to-back strikes late in the first half to give Eureka (1-1-0) a 3-2 lead at the break.

Hanover bounced back with two goals in a span of three-minutes, 19-seconds from Keith Patrick and Stawick for a 4-3 lead midway through the second half, setting the stage for O’Malley’s tying goal.

The hosts outshot the Red Devils 26-14 during the contest, including a 4-0 advantage in shots during the overtime period.  Eureka freshman goalkeeper Jay Linsley (Peoria, Ill./Limestone H.S.) stopped seven shots but took the loss.  In addition to his assist on O’Malley’s 82nd minute goal, Crady assisted on Bakirdan’s second strike to finish the match with two helpers.

The Red Devils will remain in the state of Indiana for a 3 p.m. start at Franklin on Sunday.
