Cornell Tops Eureka in double overtime, 5-4

Box Score

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Cornell junior forward Sungeun Kim scored an unassisted goal with just 1:26 remaining in double-overtime during Sunday’s game against the Eureka College men’s soccer team, sending the Rams to a 5-4 win over the Red Devils in the consolation game of the Sal Vacarro Tournament hosted by North Central in Naperville, Ill.

Sungeun’s heroics spoiled a big day for Eureka senior forward Brian O’Malley (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.), who finished the contest with three goals.  His tally in the 70th minute on an assist from freshman Tony Terdina (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore H.S.) gave the Red Devils a 4-3 lead, but Alex Beehler delivered the equalizer for the Rams with just 6:47 remaining, his second goal of the match.

Kobina Essandoh opened the scoring when his 11th minute shot found the back of the net for a 1-0 Cornell lead, but the Red Devils promptly answered with three unanswered goals.  O’Malley scored back-to-back goals in a span of 4:02 before junior Joe Lehman (Washington, Ill./Peoria Christian H.S.) made it 3-1 in favor of Eureka after his 27th minute goal on an assist from junior David Crady (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora H.S.).  Beehler scored his first goal of the game moments later to cut Cornell’s deficit in half at 3-2.

Michael Morris tied the game 4:47 into the second half before O’Malley scored his third goal in the 70th minute.

Eureka freshman goalkeeper Jay Linsley (Peoria, Ill./Limestone H.S.) made 14 saves in the loss.  Cornell’s Ben Alleva made five saves and allowed only one goal after relieving starter Ben Folan in the 31st minute.

The Red Devils will resume action with a non-conference match at Concordia (Ill.) this Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.  Eureka opens SLIAC play on Saturday at Greenville.
