Greenville Topples Men's Soccer, 8-1

Box Score

EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College senior forward Brian O’Malley (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.) extended his Division III goal-scoring lead with his 26th goal of the season, but visiting Greenville scored three times in the first eight minutes of the match to roll to an 8-1 win over the Red Devils, Tuesday afternoon at Traister Field.

O’Malley took a deflected pass from freshman teammate Tony Terdina (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore H.S.) and put a shot from close range past Greenville goalkeeper Nathan Haas in the 34th minute, but the strike came after the Panthers built a 4-0 lead.

Dan Ruder, Cobi Allen and Matt Reeb each scored unassisted goals to aid Greenville’s fast start.  Ruder and Mason Geyer answered O’Malley’s strike before halftime to stretch Greenville’s lead to 6-1 before halftime.  Ruder scored again in the 65th minute before Greenville reserve David Gregornik scored the game’s final goal in the 75th minute.

Greenville held a 41-13 advantage in shots and a 9-1 lead in corner kicks.  O’Malley finished the day with a game-high four shots on goal.  Freshman midfielder David Lahood (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.) was the only other Eureka player to put a shot on target during the match.

Eureka will travel to the St. Louis suburb of Fenton, Mo. to play SLIAC foe Webster this Thursday at 4 p.m.
