Late Illinois College Rally Sinks Eureka, 4-3

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Eureka College men’s soccer team took a 3-2 lead into halftime during Thursday’s non-conference match at Illinois College, but the Blueboys scored twice late in the second half, including the game-winner with 4:35 remaining, to come from behind and beat the Red Devils, 4-3.

After Chris Schulte gave Illinois College (5-9-1) a 1-0 lead with a goal in the fifth minute, Eureka (5-10-0) senior Brian O’Malley (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.) and junior Serkan Bakirdan (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) scored back-to-back goals in a span of 48 seconds midway through the first half to pull the Red Devils in front 2-1.

Illinois College’s Corey Marin tied the game at 2-2 in the 29th minute on an assist from Schulte, but EC junior midfielder and reigning SLIAC Offensive Player of the Week David Crady (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora H.S.) regained the lead for the Red Devils when he scored his fourth goal of the season just 3:17 before halftime.

The Eureka defense protected the one-goal lead for a large portion of the second half, but Matt Farnsworth tied the game with a goal in the 72nd minute on Tyler Carney’s assist.   Travis Wilson won it for the Blueboys when his 86th minute shot beat Eureka goalkeeper Nate Mullins (South Duxbury, Vt./Harwood Union H.S.).

Playing in miserable weather conditions, Illinois College held a 17-11 advantage in shots and a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.  Bakirdan put a game-high three shots on goal, while O’Malley and Crady finished the match with two shots on goal each.

O’Malley has now scored in four straight outings and seven of Eureka’s last nine matches for a total of 25 goals this season.  After totaling six goals in a pair of Eureka victories last week, O’Malley continues to lead Division III with 24 goals and 1.71 goals per game as of last Monday.

Eureka will make its first visit in program history to the state of Kentucky when the Red Devils play at Spalding this Saturday at 4 p.m. in Louisville.
