Men's Soccer Trio Recognized by SLIAC
EUREKA, Ill. – Three Eureka College men’s soccer players earned postseason accolades from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the league announced Saturday. Senior forward Brian O’Malley (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.) was named to the All-SLIAC Second Team, while juniors Serkan Bakirdan (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) and David Crady (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora H.S.) were named Honorable Mention.
O’Malley, who was an All-SLIAC Honorable Mention choice as a junior in 2008, finished the season as the national leader in Division III with 26 goals scored, 1.37 goals scored per game, 60 points and 3.16 points per game. He scored five of his 26 goals during SLIAC play, tying for fifth among league players. O’Malley tied his own single-game Eureka goal-scoring record with five goals in a 6-4 win over Robert Morris-Springfield on Oct. 14. He finished his senior season with seven multi-goal games and leaves the program as its all-time leader with 42 goals and 98 points. O’Malley will take part in InfoSport’s 11th annual Pro Soccer Combine at the Seminole County Sports Training Center near Orlanda, Fla. from Jan. 6-8.
A newcomer to the program, Bakirdan scored 14 goals and added eight assists in 19 starts this season on his way to an All-SLIAC Honorable Mention choice. He scored seven times in his first four career games in September and matched O’Malley with five goals against SLIAC competition, setting a career-high with three goals in a 6-1 win at MacMurray on Sept. 29. In just one season, Bakirdan ranks second all-time at Eureka with 14 goals and 36 points, and third all-time with eight assists.
Crady is a repeat Honorable Mention choice after earning the same recognition last season as a sophomore. One of Eureka’s most consistent players, Crady finished the season with a league-best 11 assists, as his average of 0.58 assists per game ranked 21st nationally. He added four goals, including a two-goal effort in Eureka’s 4-1 SLIAC win over Blackburn on Oct. 17. Crady will return for his final year of eligibility in 2010 as the all-time Eureka leader with 17 assists.
In just its third year at the NCAA Division III level, the men’s soccer team finished the 2009 season with a 5-14-0 record, a new school record for wins with five. The offense finished the season ranked ninth nationally and second in the SLIAC with 3.0 goals scored per game, and its total of 57 goals scored is a new single-season school record.
