O'Malley Scores Five in win over robert morris
EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College senior forward Brian O’Malley (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.) matched his own single-game school record with five goals, leading the Red Devils to a 6-4 nonconference victory over Robert Morris-Springfield, Wednesday afternoon at Traister Field.
O’Malley scored three times during a flurry of offense in the first half, helping the Red Devils (4-9-0) sprint to a 4-3 lead at intermission. David Crady (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora H.S.), Serkan Bakirdan (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) and Tony Terdina (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore H.S.) had assists on O’Malley’s strikes. Bakirdan added a goal in the 10th minute to give Eureka a brief 2-1 lead. O’Malley’s second and third goals pulled Eureka in front 4-3 after Patrick Boyer scored back-to-back goals in a span of 2-minutes, 15-seconds to give the visiting Eagles a 3-2 lead during a back-and-forth first half.
The Red Devils stretched their lead to 5-3 on O’Malley’s fourth goal of the game just 3:30 into the second half. Terdina earned his second assist of the game when his pass found O’Malley ahead of the defense to beat Robert Morris goalkeeper Zach Llyod on a one-on-one breakaway for the game-winning tally.
The Eagles (4-6-1) inched their way back into the game when Tyler Novy beat Eureka goalkeeper Nate Mullins (South Duxbury, Vt./Harwood Union H.S.) with an unassisted goal on a breakaway in the 60th minute. O’Malley put the game away with his fifth goal of the game in the 85th minute when Crady found O’Malley on a give-and-go down the middle of the field. O’Malley’s initial shot was stopped by Llyod, but the senior forward immediately deposited the loose rebound into the back of the net for a 6-4 EC lead that would hold up as the final score.
O’Malley’s solid offensive showing gave him 23 goals on the season and 39 goals for his EC career, both school records. He entered the week tied with Michael Cooper of Mississippi College and Steven McCarthy of Capital University (Ohio) for the Division III national lead with 18 goals scored. He previously scored five goals in a single contest to set the school record in a 6-2 win over Lincoln Christian on Sept. 8, 2008, Eureka’s first win in program history at the NCAA Division III level.
Eureka finished the match with a 26-22 advantage in shots. Mullins made five of his seven saves in the second half to help Eureka to its fourth win of the campaign.
The Red Devils will return to SLIAC competition this Saturday against Blackburn at Traister Field to end a four-match homestand. Kickoff against the Beavers is scheduled for 3 p.m.
