Red Devils End Season With 4-0 Loss at Fontbonne
CLAYTON, Mo. – The Eureka College men’s soccer team ended its third regular season in program history on Saturday, dropping a 4-0 SLIAC decision to Fontbonne in Clayton, Mo.
Mike Utley started the scoring for the host Griffins with an unassisted goal in the 10th minute. The Red Devils kept their deficit at 1-0 for the remainder of the first half.
Fontbonne stretched its lead to 2-0 on an own goal from Eureka in the 50th minute and later put the match away with goals from Kevin Vonarx and Jesse Cook.
The Red Devils were unable to put any of their six shots on goal past Fontbonne goalkeeper Zach Will. Eureka junior forward Serkan Bakirdan (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) put a game-high three shots on goal. Playing in the final match of his collegiate career, senior forward Brian O’Malley (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.) recorded two shots on goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Jay Linsley (Peoria, Ill./Limestone H.S.) returned from injury to play for the first time since Oct. 3. He made seven saves in the loss.
The Red Devils end the season with a 5-14-0 record. The five wins in a single season are a new all-time high for the men’s soccer program. O’Malley finished the season with 26 goals, the most in a single season in program history.
