Eureka Picked Eighth in SLIAC Men's Soccer Poll

SLIAC Press Release

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Ready to enter its fifth season as a member of NCAA Division III and the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Eureka College men’s soccer team has been picked to finish eighth in the SLIAC in a preseason coaches poll, according to an announcement from the conference office Thursday night.  Two-time defending SLIAC champion Greenville was chosen unanimously among the SLIAC coaches to win the league

The Panthers, currently in the midst of a 20-match SLIAC unbeaten streak (17-0-3) that dates back to the 2008 season, received a total of 72 points and eight first place votes in the preseason poll.  Fontbonne was next with one first place vote, followed in order by Webster, Principia and Westminster.  Blackburn and Spalding tied for sixth place, while MacMurray was chosen ninth.

The top four teams in the final SLIAC standings, excluding Spalding in its final year as a provisional member of NCAA Division III, will qualify for the league tournament.  The semifinal round is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 3 and the championship game will be played Saturday, Nov. 5.  All matches will be played at the site of the higher seed.  The winner of the tournament receives the SLIAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Eureka ended last season on a high note, closing the campaign with its best 11-match stretch in school history (4-6-1).  Included in that stretch was Eureka’s first victory in a SLIAC opener, the first three-match unbeaten streak (2-0-1) in program history and a 1-1 draw with five-time SLIAC champion Fontbonne on Oct. 2 at Traister Field.  This season, Eureka returns seven starters, including its top scorer, primary goalkeeper and the first trio of four-year seniors in the program’s NCAA Division III history.

The Red Devils will open the season at home for the third time in program history when they welcome non-conference foe Wisconsin Lutheran to Traister Field on Saturday, Sept. 3 for a 3 p.m. kickoff.  The match marks Eureka’s first all-time meeting with the Warriors.
