Box Score

EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka College men’s soccer team closed its 2011 season on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 4-1 decision to St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season champion Westminster at Traister Field.

The Blue Jays (11-3-4, 7-0-1 SLIAC) didn’t waste any time grabbing an early advantage, taking a 1-0 lead when Zach Moore’s laser from inside the top of the box sailed over the head of Eureka sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Mumm (Monticello, Ill./Monticello H.S.) in the 14th minute.  Adam Ross and Andrew Presnell added goals later in the half, both strikes coming on headers from close range.  Westminster carried that 3-0 advantage into intermission.

Jamie Lewis stretched Westminster’s lead to 4-0 at 58:45 with a blast from outside the box.  The Red Devils (4-12-0, 1-7-0 SLIAC) were able to answer on a tailing shot into the far top corner of the frame from senior forward Cody Halstead (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods H.S./Illinois Central) in the 63rd minute, cutting the EC deficit to 4-1.  Junior Kyle Oyer (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) picked up his second assist of the season on the play.  The offense wasn’t enough for the Red Devils, as the Blue Jays were able to close out their seventh league win of the season and earn their first regular season SLIAC title since 2002.

Halstead’s goal was his team-best eighth of the season and 18th of his two-year EC career.  His career goal total ranks second all-time at Eureka, while his 46 career points rank third.

Saturday’s match against the Blue Jays marked the final collegiate match for Eureka seniors Richie Gregory (Champaign, Ill./Judah Christian H.S.), Halstead, Derek Johnson (Leland, Ill./Leland H.S.) and Evan Kingery (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth H.S.).  Gregory, Johnson and Kingery were the first group of four-year players in Eureka men’s soccer history.
