Red Devils finish year in 6th SLIAC Championship

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Eureka men's tennis team concluded its season with a sixth place finish at the SLIAC Tennis Championship.  The Red Devils lost to Principia College (7-0), defeated Fontbonne University (6-3) and lost to Webster University (7-2).

Patrick Howard (Peoria, Ill./HS) was triumphant in his last four matches played, winning twice at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.  He was one of four Red Devils (2-9) to record multiple wins the Eureka's win over Fontbonne, taking his singles match at Love (6-0, 6-0) and teaming up with Aaron Rapp (Normal, Ill./West) for a 8-2 win in doubles.  Rapp won the top singles match (6-1, 6-2).

The team of Gordon Barkley (Peoria Heights, Ill./HS) and Jake Etscheid (Peru, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) earned a point for the Red Devils with an 8-2 win in at No. 2 doubles, then both won singles matches as well to clinch the win for EC.  Barkley won at No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-3), while Etscheid followed him on the board, taking a (6-1, 6-0) decision.

In the 5th place match against Webster, Rapp and Howard pulled out a No. 1 doubles win (8-6) and Howard finished strong with a (7-5, 6-0) singles victory.  Howard finished with a team best 6-4 singles mark — all from the No. 2 slot.  Rapp finished at 5-6 in first singles play.  As the top doubles team, they posted a 4-7 mark.

Both juniors, Rapp and Howard, who have combined for 63 wins in the Eureka careers, led an inexperienced Red Devils team this season that featured four first year players.
