Red Devils Drop Opener at Illinois College, 9-0
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Eureka College men’s tennis team opened the 2012 season on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 9-0 non-conference decision at Illinois College at King Field House in Jacksonville, Ill.
The Blue Boys (1-3) earned victories in straight sets in all six singles matchups. Eureka (0-1) senior Justin Hayse (Peoria Heights, Ill./Peoria Heights H.S.) put up the best effort at #2 singles, winning a total of six games in a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Michael Gilbreth. Freshman Nick Stein (Peoria, Ill./Limestone H.S.) and sophomore Cody Leach (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac H.S.) also won multiple games despite losses in singles action. Both Stein and Leach were making their collegiate tennis debuts on Wednesday.
The top EC doubles pairing of Stein and Hayse dropped an 8-4 decision to Colin Ladd and Gilbreth. Illinois College, which picked up its first dual victory of the season on Wednesday, won all three doubles contests.
The Red Devils will return to the court Wednesday, March 7 in their home opener against Lewis & Clark at 3 p.m.
