Webster Blanks Red Devils, 9-0
EUREKA, Ill. – The Webster men’s tennis team earned its fourth straight victory and eighth win overall with a 9-0 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Eureka College, Thursday afternoon in Eureka.
Eureka junior Aaron Phelan (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) nearly pushed Webster’s Zach Papes to the limit in the second set of their No. 4 singles match, but Papes recorded a 6-0, 6-4 victory. Freshman David Doherty (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg H.S.) did the same at No. 5 singles, but eventually dropped his match to Adis Beganovic in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. The Gorloks did not drop a set on their way to the singles sweep.
Doherty and sophomore Justin Hayse (Peoria Heights, Ill./Peoria Heights H.S.) turned Eureka’s best doubles outing in an 8-2 defeat to Beganovic and Ricky Eaves at No. 3 doubles.
Eureka will hit the road this Saturday for a pair of SLIAC matches in the St. Louis suburb of Clayton, Mo. The Red Devils will play Westminster at 2 p.m. before squaring off against host Fontbonne at 6 p.m.
