Coach Karen Sweitzer records 300th win at Eureka

Boxscores: Robert Morris | St. Mary-of-the-Woods

ROCHESTER, Ill. — Eureka College head softball coach Karen Sweitzer recorded her 300th career win at Eureka in dramatic fashion Saturday afternoon as her Red Devils squad stopped a powerhouse club from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College 1-0.  Sweitzer becomes the second coach to reach 300 victories in any sport at EC, following Dave Darnall, who amassed 383 victories in men's basketball from 1974-1994.

Eureka (5-7) scored the only tally of the game in the fifth inning as EC received its two biggest hits on the day from seniors Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) and Nicole Pitts (Pekin, Ill./HS).  Forbes, who turned in several key defense plays in the game, reached on a one-out single.  She then stole second, and raced home on an RBI single by Pitts.

From there, Eureka pitcher Abby Segal (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) and the Red Devils defense were not about to let their coach's milestone victory slip through their fingers.  St. Mary did come close to tying the game in the sixth with three singles in the frame.  But on the third hit to left field, Brandi Payne (Eureka, Ill./HS) turned in a nice play that led to a St. Mary runner being tagged out between third and home.  Segal got the next batter to ground out to the shortstop, and then retired all three batters she faced in the seventh to preserve the win.

Segal pitched around five hits and four walks in her seven innings by stranding eight St. Mary runners on base. She has not allowed an earned run in her last 26.1 innings, and won her last four decisions to improve to 5-2.

In a game that did not have an extra base hit and saw Eureka get out-hit 5-3, the speed of Forbes was a key factor in the game.  Her stolen base was her fifth successful attempt in as many tries, and she scored from second on the clutch hit by Pitts.

The Red Devils lost their first game on the day to Robert Morris Springfield 2-0.  Hits were plentiful in the game as Eureka recorded seven and the Eagles (9-6) had nine.  However, the two sides combined to go just 3-for-19 with runners in scoring position.

Eureka was blanked for the first time this season despite multiple scoring chances in the early innings.  EC left runners on second and third in the opening frame, and then failed to score after having a first and third situation with no outs in the second.

Robert Morris Springfield scored the only run it would need in the fourth thanks to a double, sacrifice and wild pitch.  The Eagles went on to get three hits in the sixth to add an insurance tally.

Molly Wolber (Rock Falls, Ill./HS) had two hits in the game to lead the EC attack.  Kelsey Brandt (Morton, Ill./HS) held the Eagles, were came in averaging 5.5 runs per game, to only two runs in a complete game effort.  She walked one and struck out three.

Eureka next has a non-conference doubleheader scheduled at Lincoln Christian College Wednesday, March 29 at 3:00 pm.
