Eureka offense produces DH sweep of Lincoln Christian

Boxscores: Game 1 | Game 2

LINCOLN, Ill. — The Red Devils softball team returned to the .500 mark for the season with a 14-3, 23-1 doubleheader sweep of Lincoln Christian College Wednesday afternoon.  Eureka scored in nine of the 10 innings played on the day.

Cathy Kalnicky (Bolingbrook, Ill./Plainfield) and the rest of the Maroon and Gold offense provided plenty of support in both games.  Kalnicky went 3-for-3 in the opener, knocking in four runs and scoring twice.  Brittany Gardner (Mooresville, Ind./HS) drove in three runs, while Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) and Molly Wolber (Rock Falls, Ill./HS) combined for seven runs scored.

Eureka (7-7) recorded three runs in the first and four more in the second to take a 7-0 lead before the Angels could get on the scoreboard against pitcher Kelsey Brandt (Morton, Ill./HS).  Brandt, who pitched a perfect game last year versus Lincoln Christian, picked up the complete game win this time, giving up three runs (one earned) on seven hits, two walks and four strikeouts over five innings.

The Red Devils did not let up at all in game two, tallying eight runs in the first and six in the second en route to Eureka's most lopsided victory since a 22-0 win over Concordia (IL) on April 20, 2003.  Forbes had three hits, three runs and fours RBIs in the nightcap to lead EC offensively.  Kalnicky, Jill Doty (Metamora, Ill./HS) and Brandi Payne (Eureka, Ill./HS) also scored three runs.  Natalie Lardi (S. Wilmington, Ill./Gardner-S. Wilmington) led the game with four runs scored.

Doty limited the Angels to only one hit in four innings to get the win.  She struck out four and walked four. Eureka clubbed 16 hits in game two, with Doty and Wolber recording doubles.

Eureka will return to conference play this weekend with a doubleheader scheduled for Friday, April 4 at Webster University in St. Louis starting at 4:00 pm.  EC is then slated to play at Westminster College at 2:00 pm the following day.
