Red Devils sweep SLIAC Player of the Week awards
EUREKA — Eureka College swept the weekly St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball awards as Abby Segal (Peoria, Ill./HS) was named Pitcher of the Week and Molly Wolber (Rock Falls, Ill./HS) was selected as Hitter of the Week for the week of March 24-30.
For Segal, this marks back-to-back "Pitcher of the Week" efforts. The junior righthander pitched in three games last week, all resulting in Eureka (5-7, 2-0 SLIAC) victories. She tossed a one-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader versus conference rival MacMurray, allowing just one unearned run with one walk and eight strikeouts in an 8-1 win. She came back in the nightcap to pitch 5.1 innings in relief to help EC sweep in a 5-4 triumph. She set down the last nine batters of the game in order, while fanning six and allowing three hits.
Segal extended her streak of innings without allowing an earned run to 26.1 with a shut out of a powerful St. Mary-of-the-Woods lineup Saturday. She scattered five hits and four walks by limiting the opposition to 0-for-7 with two outs. She gave up just nine hits and five walks during the week over 19.1 innings pitched, while recording a 3-0 record and 17 strikeouts. For the season, Segal is 5-2 with a 0.90 earned run average and 38 strikeouts in 46.2 innings.
Wolber is Eureka's first player ever to win a softball "Hitter of the Week" award. She is also just the second freshman to win a softball player of the week award in the SLIAC this year. Wolber capped a great game at the plate with the game-winning hit as Eureka beat MacMurray 5-4. She had three hits in the game, including a two-run double in the first inning. She came up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, and her RBI single knocked in the winning run. Her three runs batted in for the game are the most for a Red Devil this season.
Wolber went on to record her second multi-hit game of the week with a 2-for-3 game versus Robert Morris Springfield. She continued her error-free play in centerfield in Eureka's 1-0 victory over St. Mary-of-the-Woods, a win that marked Eureka Coach Karen Sweitzer's 300th victory at EC. For the week, Wolber hit .462 with two doubles, 3 RBIs and one run scored.
Eureka is next scheduled to play at Lincoln Christian College in a doubleheader starting at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, April 2.
