Red Devils win 2 games over Knox
EUREKA — The Red Devils won a pair of non-conference games over Knox College Monday afternoon by scores of 4-2 and 3-2 in Eureka. The Red Devils have now won eight out of their last 10 games to improve their overall record to 10-8 for the season and move over .500 for the first time since winning their first game of the year.
Eureka pitchers Abby Segal and Kelsey Brandt limited Knox (1-14) to just a .176 average (6-for-34) with runners on base in the two games. Meanwhile, Emily Forbes and Cathy Kalnicky combined to go 7-for-12 with five runs scored and four runs batted in to ignite the EC attack.
Knox took a 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but EC came back with three hits in the bottom of the second to move in front 2-1. Jill Doty doubled to the fence in center to start the rally, and later scored when Nicole Pitts' single was misplayed by the right fielder. Forbes then knocked in the go-ahead run with a
In the third inning, Kalnicky doubled the EC lead as she crushed her first career home run at home, and third this season, over the centerfield fence.
The score remained 3-1 until in the fifth when the first three hitters for Knox all reached base. Segal entered the game with runners on second and third, no outs and the Red Devils clinging to a 3-2 advantage. She got out of the jam without any of the inherited runners scoring thanks to two strikeouts and a fly out to center.
The Red Devils added a run in the bottom of the fifth as Forbes led off with a sharp single to right. The ball got by the fielder, which allowed Forbes to race all the way around the bases to make the score 4-2.
Segal went on to earn the save, recording seven of her nine outs on strikeouts. She allowed one hit and one walk over three innings. Brandt got the win, striking out six in four innings and giving up two runs.
Segal went the distance in game two, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning and making Eureka's early 3-0 lead hold up.
The Red Devils plated two runs in the first and one in the second, but were hampered by 10 runners left on base through the first four stanzas, including leaving the bases loaded three times.
Kalnicky drove in Eureka's first run in the bottom of the first with a two-out double. She moved to third on a single by Brandi Payne and scored on a bases loaded walk to Pitts, the third walk issued to EC in the frame.
Kalnicky knocked in Forbes again in the second with another double as Eureka increased its lead to 3-0. Neither team scored over the next three innings as both sides had trouble finding a clutch hit.
Segal retired the first hitter in the sixth on a pop out, but her no-hitter was broken up just five outs away from completion by a bloop single over third base by Monyca Fisher. Fisher would later score the first run on the game for Knox on a two-out double by Kate Latshaw.
Segal would get revenge, though. Fisher had a chance to put Knox ahead in the seventh as she came up with two runners in scoring position and her team down 3-2. Segal struck her out swinging to end the game. Segal struck out six in the game, allowing two runs on five hits (all in the last two innings).
The Red Devils will return to conference play Wednesday with a doubleheader match up versus Fontbonne University in Eureka starting at 3:00 pm.
