Kalnicky sets school HR record, leads EC to key SLIAC win

Boxscores: Game 1 | Game 2

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Cathy Kalnicky (Bolingbrook, Ill./Plainfield) became Eureka College's all-time home run leader as she launched her seventh career round-tripper over the fence in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Maryville University, doing so in less than two full seasons.  Even more importantly, her timing was impeccable for the Red Devils as her blast helped EC erase a three-run deficit en route to a 6-4 victory after the Saints has won the opening game 4-2.

The Red Devils (12-12, 5-5 SLIAC) nearly rallied back from a 3-0 Maryville (17-14, 5-3 SLIAC) lead in game one as well.  The Saints put up a single tally in the first and two more in the second, but stranded five runners on base through the first three frames.

Meanwhile, Eureka was held to just one hit, a Molly Wolber (Rock Falls, Ill./HS) single to lead off the game, through the first five innings.  But the Red Devils slugged six out six hits over the final two stanzas to make the Saints sweat it out until the end.

The first four EC hitters up in the top of the sixth all reached base.  Wolber led off with a single, which was followed by a hit batter and walk to load the bases.  Kalnicky cut the Maryville advantage to 3-1 with an infield single that moved all three runners up one base. Despite there still being no outs at the time, Eureka would settle for just the one run because the next three batters were set down in order.

The Saints increased their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the inning after their lead off hitter reached on a dropped third strike and scored on a one-out double.  That would prove to be a costly run for the Red Devils, who mounted a serious threat in the seventh.

Nicole Pitts (Pekin, Ill./HS) begin the inning with a single, the first of four hits in the inning for EC.  Wolber later added her third hit of the game, and Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) loaded the bases with a two-out single.  Kalnicky singled in her second run of the game, advancing the potential tying run to scoring position, but a pop out ended the game with Maryville ahead 4-2.

Wolber went 3-for-4 in the game with two stolen bases.  Kalnicky was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.  Jill Doty (Metamora, Ill./HS) started in the circle for Eureka, tossing a total of four innings with four runs allowed (three earned) on six hits and three strikeouts.  Kelsey Brandt (Morton, Ill./HS) pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Erin Clark improved her pitching record to 8-7 by pitching seven frames and giving up two runs, seven hits and fanning five for the Saints, who won despite getting out-hit 7-6.

In the nightcap, Maryville built a 3-0 lead by recording single runs in each of the first three innings.  The Red Devils, who were batting second due to conference rules, sprung to life offensively in the bottom of the third.  Mary Garbett (Georgetown, Ohio/Western Brown) reached base on a hit by pitch ahead of Eureka's first hit of the game — a two-run homer by Wolber.  For Wolber, it was her first collegiate home run, and it extended her hitting streak to seven games.  Forbes later drew a two-out walk just ahead of Kalnicky's seventh career home run, and fourth of the season, that put EC ahead 4-3.

Tina Sharp and Minda Sylvester had previously held the career home run record, having hit six homers in their Eureka College careers.

The Red Devils took advantage of two Maryville errors and hits by Brandi Payne (Eureka, Ill./HS) and Doty to open up a 6-3 lead in the fourth.  Six runs would prove to be plenty of Abby Segal (Peoria, Ill./Limestone), who limited the Saints to just two hits and one run over the final four innings to get her eighth win if the season.  She gave up four runs in her ninth complete game of the year.

Wolber polished a five-hit day by going 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs batted in game two. She has now recorded three consecutive multi-hit games.

The Red Devils have six home games slated for next week as they make a final push for the SLIAC Tournament.  Next up is Fontbonne University on Monday, April 21 at 3:00 pm in Eureka.
