Abby Segal pitches perfect game, strikes out 9 vs. LCC

Boxscores: Game 1 | Game 2

EUREKA — EC junior pitcher Abby Segal (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) twirled a five-inning perfect game to complete a 9-0, 16-0 doubleheader sweep of Lincoln Christian College Wednesday in Eureka.

Segal struck out nine of the 15 hitters she faced, though there were some tense moments in the final inning.  With one out, Jenyelynn Smith hit a ground ball between first and second base.  Nicole Ropp (Minonk, Ill./Fieldcrest) smothered it and tossed to first from one knee to record the out.  Ropp later made the final put out as well.

Segal fanned nine of the 12 batters in the first four innings, including all three she faced in the second.  She now has 87 strikeouts for the season, which ranks as the fourth most in school history for a single season.  She is 10-4 on the year with four complete game shutouts.

Kelsey Brandt (Morton, Ill./HS), who tossed a perfect game against Lincoln Christian last season, pitched a two-hitter in the opening game with no walks and two strikeouts in five innings.  She recorded 10 ground ball outs for her second shutout of the year.

Cathy Kalnicky (Bolingbrook, Ill./Plainfield) had a pair of hits in both games and knocked in a total of seven runs.  She went 2-for-2 with 3 RBI in the first game, including a two-run double in the first inning that got Eureka (15-13) off to a 3-0 lead.

Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais), who scored three runs in both games, had the Red Devils' only hit during a three-run rally in the second that opened up a 6-0 advantage.  Eureka added three more in the fourth as Kalnicky and Brandi Payne (Eureka, Ill./HS) registered RBI base hits.

Kalnicky, Jill Doty (Metamora, Ill./HS) and Natalie Lardi (S. Wilmington, Ill./Gardner-S. Wilmington) each had two hits in the nightcap.  Doty drove in three runs and carded one of Eureka's two extra base hits with a double.  Molly Wolber (Rock Falls, Ill./HS) joined Forbes with three runs scored, while Forbes and Ropp had two RBI apiece.  Brittany Gardner (Mooresville, Ill./HS) went 2-for-2 on the day with three sacrifices, hit by pitch, walk, RBI and two runs.

The Red Devils are still very much in the mix for a SLIAC Tournament spot, but need two wins over Blackburn College in their final home doubleheader of the season Saturday, April 26.  Senior Day ceremonies for Eureka's five seniors will take place prior to the first pitch at 1:00 pm.
