5 Red Devils Named to SLIAC All-Conference Teams
EUREKA — A total of five members of the Eureka College softball team received recognition from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference following a vote of the league's coaches. Three Red Devils earned second team honors, while two others were honorable mention selections.
Eureka's second team All-SLIAC performers were Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais), Abby Segal (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) and Molly Wolber (Rock Falls, Ill./HS). The honorable mention choices were Cathy Kalnicky (Bolingbrook, Ill./Plainfield) and Natalie Lardi (S. Wilmington, Ill./Gardner-S. Wilmington).
Forbes, a senior four-year member of the team, had one of the finest defensive seasons in school history. She started all 31 games, committing only six errors for a .960 fielding percentage at one of the most demanding positions on the field at shortstop. She was even better in conference play, making just two errors in 66 chances (.970). Defense is just the beginning of the story with Forbes, however. She also hit .307 with a team-leading 32 runs scored and 18 stolen bases in 19 attempts, helping Eureka set a single season record for stolen base percentage at 89.6 percent (43-for-48). Her single season stolen base totals ranks as the fifth highest in school history. She finished her career ranked sixth in EC history in triples and sacrifices and seventh in stolen bases. Forbes was named SLIAC Hitter of the Week for the week of March 31 - April 6. She was also Honorable Mention All-SLIAC for volleyball last fall.
Segal, a junior transfer from Lincoln C.C., was one of two pitchers on the second team. She ranked fourth in strikeouts and fifth in batting average against in league play. Segal won back-to-back SLIAC Pitcher of the Week awards March 17-30, finishing the run with a five-hit shutout of St. Mary-of-the-Woods for EC coach Karen Sweitzer's 300th win at Eureka. Segal tossed four shutouts on the season, including a perfect game versus Lincoln Christian April 23. She went 10-5 on the season with a 2.05 ERA in 106 innings. She struck out 93 batters, tying for the third highest single season mark in EC history. Her toughness can be best seen in her .192 batting average against, which set a school record by 18 points. As a team, Eureka lowered its team ERA by 2.7 runs from last season, setting a school record with 137 strikeouts.
Wolber was one of just three freshman on the first or second teams. Despite being an infielder in high school, Wolber started all 31 games in the outfield for the Red Devils. She had a perfect fielding percentage on 40 chances, helping Eureka set a single season team record with a .954 fielding percentage. Wolber was second on the team with a .323 batting average for the season and .380 mark versus SLIAC opponents. She was also second on the squad with 21 runs, 31 hits, four doubles and eight stolen bases while recording more walks (12) than strikeouts (11). She was named SLIAC Hitter of the Week for the week of March 24-30, and ranked fifth SLIAC play in hits.
Kalnicky, a sophomore who set the Eureka career record for home runs at seven in just her second season on the team, led the Red Devils in many offensive categories, including batting average (.443), hits (43), doubles (14), home runs (4), RBI (31), slugging percentage (.732) and on base percentage (.491). In conference play, she ranked third in hits, fourth in on base percentage and doubles and sixth in batting average. Kalnicky closed the season on a tear, hitting .500 in 19 games played in April, including a nine-game hitting streak.
Lardi started all 31 games at third base in her senior year for Eureka, giving her 95 consecutive starts over the last three seasons. She ranked second on the team in with nine multi-hit games. She was third on the team in batting average (.309), hits (30) and RBI (10). Lardi finished her EC career with 226 assists for the sixth highest total in program history. She was a part of five of Eureka's 14 double plays turned this year. As a team, EC ranks fourth in the country in double plays turned per game.
Eureka finished at 15-16 overall and in fifth place in the SLIAC with a 6-8 league record. The Red Devils were the only team to defeat SLIAC champion Maryville by more than one run in a game this year, beating the Saints 6-4 on the road April 19.
