Alig records 1st career hit, 3-Hit game in losses to Piedmont, maryville
The Red Devils softball team played Piedmont College to a scoreless draw through four innings, but suffered a 5-0 loss to the Lions in the third game of the Maryville Invitational on Monday.
Eureka (0-3) pitcher Abby Segal (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) more than matched Piedmont's B.J. Cofer pitch-for-pitch through the first four frames. Segal allowed just one hit - a lead off double in the fourth - during that time, while the Red Devils collected three safeties, though they could not string any together in the same inning.
Piedmont (4-6), which finished the tournament with a 3-1 mark, took charge in the fifth as the Lions first five hitters recorded base hits. Eureka trailed 4-0 before the curtains closed on the rally. Piedmont set the final margin by tacking on a single run in the sixth.
Segal was charged with just one earned run over six innings pitched for EC. She struck out five and walked four. She also had one of Eureka's three hits in the game. The others were by Nicole Ropp (Minonk, Ill./Fieldcrest) and Carissa Alig (Metamora, Ill./HS). For Alig, is was her first collegiate hit. She also reached base with a walk.
In game two on the day against Maryville College, Alig went a perfect 3-for-3, but Eureka was just 1-for-10 with runners on base in an 8-0 loss to the Scots.
Alig led off the game with a single, then recorded singles with two outs in the third and one out in the fifth. But, she was not able to advance beyond second base even though Ropp, Cathy Kalnicky (Bolingbrook, Ill./Plainfield) and Jill Doty (Metamora, Ill./HS) each found the hit column for EC as well.
Maryville (5-7), which finished its home invitational with a record of 2-2, took a 1-0 lead after the first inning with the first three batters reaching base, though the Scots missed a chance for more by stranding the bases loaded. That had no lingering effects for Maryville in the second inning, however, as Alicia Brown hit a three-run triple and scored on an error with the bases loaded to open up a 5-0 lead.
Eureka (0-4) starting pitcher Tomi Tapper (East Peoria, Ill./HS) fanned five through three innings. She allowed seven runs, but three were the result of two EC errors.
Alig's three-hit game is the first by a Red Devil this year and the first in 10 games dating back to the 2008 season.
Eureka will next be in action Wednesday, March 11 with a doubleheader at LaGrange College beginning at 3:30 pm.
