Red Devils attack awakens, but panthers claw back for DH sweep
The Red Devils defense and pitcher Abby Segal (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) kept the game close, but Eureka College was shutout for the third consecutive start behind its ace pitcher in a 5-0 loss in the first game of a doubleheader at LaGrange College Wednesday. The Red Devils put a season-high five runs on the board in game two, but could not hold on to a 4-0 lead against the homestanding Panthers in losing a 12-5 decision.
LaGrange's Katie Ison, who went 7-for-8 in the two games, was given new life in her at bat in the third inning when her foul ball was dropped. She made Eureka (0-6) pay a steep price as she smacked a two-run homer to left to put the Panthers (3-13) ahead 2-0 in the opener.
That second-chance hit was the only mark against Segal until the fifth when LaGrange put together a three run, three hit rally in which all of the tallies came with two outs. Segal recorded her third complete game in three starts, giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits in six innings. She struck out three.
Erika Thomas (East Peoria, Ill./HS) carded her first career hit with a single leading off the third inning. Cathy Kalnicky (Bolingbrook, Ill./Plainfield), Tomi Tapper (East Peoria, Ill./HS) and Nicole Ropp (Minonk, Ill./Fieldcrest) accounted for the other hits in the game for EC.
In the nightcap, Eureka took advantage of four LaGrange errors in the opening frame to race out to a 4-0 lead. Three miscues involving Eureka's first two hitters set up an RBI chance for Tapper, who lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Carissa Alig (Metamora, Ill./HS). Kalnicky picked up Eureka's lone hit of the inning with a single ahead of an RBI fielder's choice by Ropp that sent home Amy Scammahorn (Decatur, Ill./Warrensburg-Latham). Kalnicky later scored on a passed ball, while Ropp crossed the plate on the back-end of a double steal.
LaGrange responded with two runs in the first and a single tally in the second to cut the EC lead to 4-3. The Red Devils missed a chance to extend the lead in the second after putting two runners on base.
The third proved to be the decisive frame as the Panthers put forth a five run, six hit attack for seize an 8-4 advantage. Kalnicky knocked in Scammahorn with one gone in the fifth to get Eureka within 8-5, and two other Red Devils reached base in the sixth, but EC could not get any closer before LaGrange tacked on three insurance markers in the bottom of the sixth.
Kalnicky led the Red Devil attack, going 3-for-7 with a run and RBI. Scammahorn recorded a pair of runs scored and had one of Eureka's three stolen bases. Segal tossed 3.2 innings in relief, striking out six.
