Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

GREENVILLE, Ill. – Eureka College sophomore second baseman Tomi Tapper (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria H.S.) hit a two-out grand slam to cap a five-run third inning and push the Red Devils to a 6-0 win in game one of Wednesday’s SLIAC doubleheader at Greenville.  The Red Devils jumped to a big lead in the nightcap on their way to a 13-2 win and doubleheader sweep.

The Red Devils did all of their damage in the five-run inning with two outs.  The Panthers had a chance to get out of the inning without allowing any runs, but a fielding error extended the inning for Tapper, who cleared the bases with her second home run of the season for a 5-0 Eureka lead.  Sophomore Heather Skelton (Harvard, Ill./Alden-Hebron H.S.) extended the lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning with a run-scoring single.

Eureka senior starting pitcher Kelsey Brandt (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) tossed a four-hit shutout in the circle, the sixth shutout of her collegiate career.  Skelton led the offense with a 3-for-4 showing.

In game two, Eureka put the game away early with a five-run first inning.  Tapper, Sarah Jesse (Mackinaw, Ill./Bloomington H.S.) and Kelsey Netherton (Sullivan, Ill./Sullivan H.S.) drove home runs during the frame.

Sophomores Carissa Alig (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) and Allie Trainer (Manito, Ill./Midwest Central H.S.) later added run-scoring hits for the Red Devils, who led 12-2 after three innings.  Greenville was unable to close the gap by the fifth inning, putting the SLIAC’s eight-run rule into effect.

Alig went 3-for-4 to lead a 14-hit outburst by the Red Devils.  Five different Eureka players had at least two hits in game two, including doubles from Jesse and Netherton.  Jesse picked up the win for Eureka in circle, allowing two runs on five hits through five innings.

Eureka will continue SLIAC play this Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fontbonne in Clayton, Mo.
