Eureka Softball Splits Doubleheader With Monmouth

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka College softball team earned its first victory of the 2010 season when the Red Devils came from behind to top non-conference foe Monmouth, 11-10 in eight innings, Thursday afternoon in Eureka.  The Fighting Scots returned the favor with a 14-1 win in five innings in game two for the doubleheader split.

Eureka (1-7) overcame a 10-9 deficit in the eighth inning of game one for the victory.  Playing international tiebreaker rules, Eureka senior Cathy Kalnicky (Bolingbrook, Ill./Plainfield H.S.) was placed at second base to start the inning.  After freshman Lauren Kao (Normal, Ill./Normal Community H.S.) reached on an error, sophomore second baseman Tomi Tapper (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria H.S.) delivered the late-inning heroics with a two-run double to give Eureka a walk-off 11-10 win.

The Red Devils needed a rally to force extra innings earlier in the game.  Trailing 9-7 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Ashley Unzicker (El Paso, Ill./El Paso-Gridley H.S.) and Amy Scammahorn (Decatur, Ill./Warrensburg-Latham/Parkland) recorded RBI singles for a 9-9 tie.  Scammahorn’s single came with two outs.

Kao and Tapper each went 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Red Devils in game one.  Senior Jill Doty (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) and Unzicker added doubles for Eureka.  Senior Kelsey Brandt (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) tossed all eight innings for a complete game victory, her first of the season and 17th of her career.

Monmouth (2-7) used an eight-run fifth inning to run away with a 14-1 victory in the nightcap.  The Fighting Scots started the inning with six consecutive hits and sent a total of 12 batters to the plate during the frame.  Courtney Bennett provided the big blow of the inning with a three-run home run to right field.

Kalnicky went 2-for-3 with a double in game two to pace the Red Devils.  Sophomore shortstop Carissa Alig (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) recorded the lone Eureka RBI of the game.

The Red Devils will visit Rockford this Saturday for a noon doubleheader.
