Softball Falls at Spalding, Clinches SLIAC Tournament Berth
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Eureka College senior pitcher Kelsey Brandt (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) allowed only one run on two hits over six innings against Spalding on Saturday, but the Golden Eagles broke a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on their way to a 1-0 win over the Red Devils. The news wasn’t all bad for the Eureka, however, as the Red Devils clinched their first-ever SLIAC Tournament berth thanks to MacMurray’s loss at Fontbonne.
Spalding scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single from Jackie Skaggs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Eureka had its chances earlier in the game, stranding a total of seven runners throughout the contest. The Red Devils loaded the bases in the fifth inning with only one out, but a strikeout and a flyout ended the threat.
Despite the loss, Eureka clinched one of the four spots in the SLIAC Tournament, scheduled to begin Thursday, May 6 at ABC Park in St. Ann, Mo. MacMurray, who entered the weekend two games behind the Red Devils with two games left to play, lost a 10-0 decision against league-leading Fontbonne to secure Eureka’s spot in the tournament. The tournament berth is the first for the Red Devils since joining the conference prior to the 2007 season.
Game two of the doubleheader against Spalding was rained out. A makeup date has not been scheduled. Eureka will host its annual Senior Day this Tuesday with a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against Knox.
